My Students

Personal space is a big deal to a 5-year-old! My students enjoy having a "spot" on the carpet they can call their own!

My students are creative, funny, loving, ornery, and are full of potential.

They have many obstacles in their way and many of them have already experienced more in their short lives than I will ever have to experience. Our school is a year-round school in a very low-income part of the city where gangs are prevalent and children are left to fend for themselves most of the time. When our children come to school, they know they are safe and they know they will be taken care of.

My Project

A rug will allow each child to have their own "spot". When a child has their own square, they are able to focus better, they don't have to worry about someone else bothering them, and it is comforting to them to be able to call something "theirs". Having a rug in the classroom will also help me provide a better community with my students. It is a meeting place where we gather for story time, phonics activities, math games, morning meeting, and our closing meeting. This rug will help my students learn colors, ABC's, counting, boundaries, and even sharing.

For many of our students, school is the only place they can be children.

They want to feel safe at school and by having their own "spot" they feel secure and are taught boundaries. This rug will not only provide safety and security, but it will also provide a place in the classroom to build community. This rug will have an impact for many years, not just this coming year.
