My Students

Video games and TV--Kids love them. Why not bring that enjoyment into the classroom, but use it to teach about the world around us? With new technology, it is easy to find video clips and games on just about anything. But teachers must have a means to present the information to students.

We are a small K-5 school located in Arizona.

Our kids are inquisitive and excited about learning. It is exhilarating to watch their faces when they have been struggling with a new concept and then suddenly get it! They just beam with pride. These kids are willing to do the hard work it takes to succeed in life, even though many of them have several strikes against them. Our neighborhood has a high poverty level, with many of our parents working two jobs to make ends meet. Unfortunately, we are also located in Arizona, the fiftieth state as far as educational spending goes. But having some of the technology that is available today brought into the classroom, not only makes their learning much more meaningful, it also increases their desire to learn about the world in which we live. Having a projector will allow my students to view the world and learn about its wondrous places without even leaving the classroom. I am hoping to inspire them to find places they will want to visit.

My Project

I have a lap top and brand new speakers (from DonorsChoose.org). Now I need a projector that actually works! I love to show video clips from learning websites that go along with our curriculum. Our science kits are Insects, and Air and Weather. We collect insects in our room. We watch them go through the life cycles, and we do experiments with the properties of air and learn about the three basic cloud types and the cycles of the moon. But learning is greatly enhanced when I can use the web to show them video clips on various insect families or how clouds are moved by air, and how the moon looks up close. It's much easier to understand why the moon is sometimes dark when you can see a video on space, rather than looking at pictures. The computer is such a powerful tool in the classroom. Unfortunately we get two computers for 30 kids, making it necessary for a projector so everyone gets a chance for better understanding. We can also play online class games that improve our learning.

By having a projector, my kids are going to be introduced to places and things in the world that they would otherwise only read about.

Seeing and hearing a waterfall in a South American rain forest is so much more inspiring than just looking at a beautiful picture. I want my kids to leave my classroom with a need to discover more. That drive will help them overcome the obstacles they face, and help them to become the great citizens we need in our country.
