This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, my students know that cleanliness is very important to me. I wipe down the desks twice a day, once in the morning and once at the end of the day.

My students always love to do labs in health and in life science.

Some labs require them to eat (poor kids- getting to eat in class :-)), like our DNA candy models using twizzlers and colored gum drops or M n M probabilities labs. My students sit at desks, in rows, but I have them bring their desks together during group work. No matter what they are doing, I like to know their work areas are clean.

My Project

I go through disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizers quite fast in my classroom. I like to have hand sanitizers on hand to help reduce the spread of germs in the class. As for the desks in my room, they were brand new when I got to the class, and four years later they are still looking like new. Other teachers ask me how I keep them clean, and I just tell them I clean them myself daily, and the kids know I check for any writing on the desks daily. If I see writing on the desk, I can figure out who wrote on it since I have seating charts for each class, but rarely do my kids write on the desks. Perhaps because I remind them to help me keep their work areas clean. Also, if a student is sick, I wipe their desk down very well before the next period comes in to help keep those germs away from the next child sitting in that desk. I also used these wipes in our testing for bacteria lab, where we test desks that have been cleaned and desks that have not been cleaned.
