My Students

With fun-filled Flat Stanley literature, our classroom computer, and a digital camera, our class plan is to travel around the world via snail-mail and e-mail in order to broaden our limited travel experience! Viewing communities globally and soaring to newly traveled heights!

The western North Carolina students I serve are socio-economically and experientially challenged.

With little to no access to Internet nor electronic devices, most have not traveled further than their community or county lines. Our rural school is striving to expand their knowledge beyond their limited walls. The North Carolina Standard Course of Study requires second graders to compare and contrast various cultures making the job of instruction difficult in our limited environment.

My Project

I wish for every one of my students to understand the world in a different and accepting light. Gathering data and viewing pictures from cultures from half-way around the world, to see their stamps, their attire, their homes, and schools will allow my students to see themselves as part of a much larger picture. Preparing students for the 21st Century is upon us. Lack of experience should not cripple the future of my students. Pictures in a book are great - but receiving actual photo's and words from the very places they see in these books - are priceless and can change, or better yet, rock my kid's tiny worlds!

Reading and discussing other areas in the world is a start to global awareness.

But, cataloging digitally our community, then, in turn, sending it out to be viewed and responded to by others is amazing. However, receiving back information from exotic places throughout the entire year is exciting! Won't you be a part in opening the world to 22 remarkable young minds.
