My Students

Ready to read! My goal in my class is not only to teach all of my students how to read, but to teach them to love to read! I want to inspire them by showing them what amazing children they are, and I want them to see what great readers they can become!

My First Graders come to school with a variety of feelings about reading and being in school.

Some children are very excited and eager to learn. Some are very scared and unsure because they lack self-confidence. Some are completely unmotivated because they receive no encouragement and support from home, and therefore they don't think they are capable of doing the work so they are unmotivated to even try. Reading is such an important part of First Grade. It is critical that children have a lot of exposure to hearing fluent readers read stories. By listening to fluent readers, the students will gain a better understanding of how their reading is supposed to sound. Since most of my students have no exposure to fluent reading at home, I am left with the daunting task of exposing all of them as often as I can to as much fluent reading as I can. While we read many stories on a daily basis, it is important that the children hear other people other then just myself read.

My Project

Our reading series has an amazing CD library that accompanies it. Every story that is in the students' reading book is on the CD's. The children have an opportunity to listen to other people read the stories, and they love listening to other people bring the characters to life. We have one CD player in our classroom for the children to use to listen to the story. However, my students who are really struggling with reading need more then just one exposure to hearing the story being read by someone else. If I could download the stories onto the MP3 players then the students could listen to the stories at their desks at their own pace. They would be able to stop them and practice the story on their own at different places in the story. The uses for having the stories on the mp3 players are endless and I am excited about having the opportunity to reach my students in a new way.

One way to crush a child's spirit is for the child to feel embarrassed.

Many times a child will not read out loud because he or she feels embarrassed. I am very excited about the idea that I could give the children an opportunity to learn and practice a story at a pace that is appropriate for them. They won't feel like they are in competition with anyone else. Your donations could help children start a new trend in their families. A trend where they think education is fun and important!
