Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students should be able to read novels that are exciting and interesting, however not all of the novel sets available to my students fit this criteria. My students are in need of novels that pack a punch. These novels are all high interest for 8th grade students.

My students come from all different backgrounds.

There are students who hang out at the country club with their family, sitting beside students who do not have a permanent home. They need books that will interest them because, in the past, they have not been introduced to books with strong messages. Many of my students are not aware of anything outside of their Facebook account. These students attend a large public middle school that is focusing on increasing rigor in the coming school year. These students will all benefit from the cultural and message-driven discussions we will be able to have with these novels.

My Project

Each book on my wish list was chosen for the potential impact it could have on 8th grade students. A Long Way Gone introduces students to a young boy who is forced to become a soldier in Sierra Leone. The Hunger Games is a futuristic tale of a 16 year-old girl living in what remains of the United States. The Kite Runner will help students understand more about Afghanistan. The other books on the list deal with World War II, 1930s America, and more. With these novels, students will be able to engage in meaningful class discussions, explore and understand other cultures, and improve their critical reading skills. Students will participate in small and large group discussions with these novels. They will research topics that are related to the novels. They will write about these novels. Having this set of novels will make 8th grade language arts more exciting for my students.

The bottom line is, reading is important.

Sadly, students are not always given relevant, interesting novels to read in school. The books I put on this list were chosen specifically because of this. Students need good books to read, and these are good books. Introducing students to the ideas, cultures, and messages in these books will make my students think, reflect, and form their own personal opinions about a variety of topics.
