Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Why is a math teacher taking time for art? Hmmm, it's an honest question, but if you have ever tried to maintain a child's interest in learning, then you know the answer. Children need to have FUN while learning and what better way than including ART!
My students are like most kids today, they thrive when there is visual, hands on, colorful activities.
I was inspired to include drawings and doodles when I was their age. I was lucky that my mom also loved to doodle and she recognized what was needed for my learning. So many of my students come from homes that both parents work long hours and as a result may not get a lot of extra time to explore their own learning needs.
My Project
I personally include a lot of drawings or doodles in my lessons. I try to bring math problems to life by including funny pictures or backgrounds of the story. I realized that my students should be the ones drawing the pictures, because their interpretation may be completely different than my own. Often though, they need a little help getting started. I provide examples, simple drawing lessons, and tons of art supplies, but I would love to have more art books so that they can take their imaginations to whole new level. In my math class we create our own math problems that we share with everyone and drawings are always included. As a result, these amazing kids ask for more time to create MATH problems, often choosing that over playing a game. What is also so great is that they are writing! Who knew? Well, I do now.
This project will bring math to life, help my students see that math is all around us, and that math CAN be FUN!
When we take time as adults to look at our world, we see the beauty of math. I want to open up my student's world to the same wonderful world of math.
