Inspiring Reluctant Readers Through Highly-Engaging Books

My students need highly-engaging adolescent literature books to begin a life-long journey of becoming passionate readers.

My Students

Reading changes my students' lives. I have witnessed this first-hand and it is phenomenal. I wish you could see the look on my students' faces as they become immersed in another world. For 20 minutes daily in my class, they escape abuse, poverty, bullying, and social trauma. Books change the world.

My wonderful eighth graders are on the cusp of adulthood--not yet adult, not a child any longer.

They are experiencing the world as only teens do. I remember middle school and all the changes it brought with it. I don't have all the answers. I can offer solace, hugs, food, and unconditional love, but a book can truly help a teen solve his/her problems in life. With a book, my teens are never alone. There is a character out there, between the pages, who has experienced the same social/emotional/physical situations as my students. They read to discover more about themselves and the world. My job is to put a book in the hands of each of my students and hold my breath that they can find answers within the binding. Our students deserve to experience the unrestrained joy of becoming fully immersed in a book. The absolute joy is seeing the look on their faces upon completing an amazing book--it's worth every penny that I have ever personally spent.

My Project

Books have changed my classroom. My state scores have increased 17%+ for the two years that I have been teaching. I attribute this to dedicating 20 minutes of every class period to self-choice reading. Reading cures writing ills, expands vocabulary, and serves to broaden the horizons of my students. We need well-read students to help us solve the world's future problems. If I could, I would record a message from each of my students about how books have changed their world. They are passionate and engaged readers. This has made them amazing students in all of their core classes. I wish that you could see a reluctant reader literally bounce into my classroom the day after he/she has completed a book. The look on their face is priceless and it inspires me to continue to buy any book my students will read. These are life's milestones and I am so thankful to be a small part of it.
