Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Poetry must be heard as well as read; modern technology such as iPods allows this merger. As students read published poets and write personal work, the excitement for publishing and sharing increases. iPods capture and share the energy and vibrance of student poetry.

My students and school site struggle with access to technology due to lower socioeconomic backgrounds and have limited experience in the community and its cultural offerings.

When they work with computers and other technology, they spark and collaborate in creative, formative ways. Using contemporary poetry as the springboard for expression, students develop powerful personal and cultural gems. ALWAYS, students want to share their work and hear and view the work of their classmates. iPods are the ideal method for this sharing. I envision students filming one another reading and visualizing poetic images, as well as filming family members and community members as they read and discuss poetry. The results will be podcasts for school and class viewing, as well as community and family members. Our local poetry center at the University of Arizona also will assist with our project through field trips and visiting poets, sharing poetic lives from the inside and the outside.

My Project

Imagine students writing poetry using models of contemporary and classical poets. The excitement of these life moments, past, present, and future, will energize the minds and spirits of my students, allowing them to create chapbooks and digital video and audio projects. During the project, they will ask family and community members about favorite poems and record readings and explanations by the readers. Students then create digital portfolios of this work, downloading the iPod versions as podcasts and inserting them into personal portfolios. We will arrange a poetry showcase at night in a Poetry Cafe format, inviting family, community, and school members. These poetry and portfolio efforts will be used in other English classes, since I am collaborating with a science teacher and another English teacher, most of my students will have in following years. Students will learn the power of the poetry and the publishing process as 21st century learners.

Our students can be short-sighted due to technology limitations.

To better prepare students for college, they will use current technology to highlight personal writing and share this locally, nationally, and internationally. We will also use the iPods for future projects dealing with college applications and career and future planning, filming mock interviews and belief statements. The use of iPods will give visual learners immediate access to their efforts.
