Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you love to celebrate holidays? Have you ever been to an American landmark? The first graders in my class can explore America and it's cultures with your help.

I teach first grade in a high poverty school in California.

Most of my students eat free breakfast and lunch at school. We have a very multicultural school and most of my students are bilingual. My students love learning about other cultures. Each year we have a school wide family cultural night to celebrate diversity and try foods from different countries. Many of my students do not have a lot of books to read at home, so the weekly reader will benefit them and their siblings.

My Project

My students are not able to travel and see the symbols of America that we study in first grade. The poster pack will help them see the landmarks of America. The book "I Am America" will show my students that there are many different people in our country, but we are all Americans. The Holiday photo books will show them how holidays from a variety of cultures are celebrated in the United States. The weekly readers are delivered to the class each week of the entire school year. Each student gets their own color copy to take home and share with their families. The magazines are written in simple language for first graders to read and are great practice for my English Language Learners. Each week has a topic related to first grade curriculum in social studies, science or health and safety.

Please help my first graders learn more about cultural diversity and the importance of being a good American citizen.
