Up Close and Personal

My Students

Have you ever tried to learn or understand something without being able to see it? This is the dilemma facing my students during science every day.

My students are a boisterous group of 25 sixth graders.

They love to dig into projects with their hands and experience what they are learning with all of their senses. We are part of a school of more than 1,000 students in a state that spends the least money per pupil in the nation. Because of district restructuring, our district is more than $30 million in debt. All of our funds and staff have been reduced. I believe that our students are still entitled to the best education I can give them, despite these setbacks. With this project, I would not only be able to enhance my current class' education, but also the other 4 sixth grade teachers' classes for many years to come.

My Project

Sixth grade students in our state are required to examine and illustrate microorganisms, compare characteristics observed in microorganisms, research and report on a microorganism’s requirements, observe and report on microorganisms’ harmful effects on food, and plan and carry out an investigation on microorganisms. All of these activities require being able to see the microorganisms. The microscopes available to our class do not have high enough magnification to see microorganisms or their structures, and many of them have lights that are no longer functional due to wiring and bulb issues. With this teaching microscope, students will be able to vividly see a variety of microorganisms on slides or provided from different environments by the students. Colors, structures, and movement will be clear to the students and give them a deeper understanding of their purposes. The dual viewers will allow me to assist students in locating and focusing on different aspects of the slides.

With this teaching microscope, my students will be able to see what they are learning.

And as we all know, seeing is believing! This will allow my students to come to a greater understanding of microorganisms and their structures and functions, as well as experience with using a microscope and designing and carrying out their own experiments. This knowledge will be carried with my students for their whole lives, and will affect all of my students for many years to come!
