Urban Photo Essays through the Lens of the Future

"A picture is worth a thousand words" If that were true than what might a photo essay be worth?

My students use and consume digital media every waking moment of the day.

They use images and text to convey their interests and ideas to others. In my art class, my students incorporate images found online into their own creative work. This allows them to make art that is current and relevant to their lives.

My Project

This upcoming school year will be the first time the school will be offering photography. The digital cameras will be used by the students to complete photography projects. One of the first projects will be a photo essay documenting personal identity. My students will take self-portrait pictures through objects and environments that surround them. Essentially describing themselves without a direct photo of themselves. My students are constantly developing their identity through the choices they make - clothes, accessories, shoes, friends, hobbies, music and media consumption. But are they able to distill it into a meaningful realization? What is their identity made of? Is their identity consciously made or as a result of external forces? After the photo essay is completed by each student, the essays will be shared with classmates. Who will then make interpretations of who the person might be through the images of the person's identity.

The donation of the digital cameras will help my students succeed in making creative photographic images.

They will be taught technical skills and compositional concepts. They will broaden their understanding of an image through the use of photography. Some of my students have won awards for the photographs they took. Two students won gold awards for their self-portrait work. The power of capturing an image that speaks about ones identity and share it with others is very inspiring.
