Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We, adults, have come to realize that kids are the native inhabitants in the world of technology, while we are simply immigrants. So, by stepping into their world, we can help them to make leaps, rather than steps, toward success. For English language learners, success can seem even farther away.

I teach in a Title I school in a large metropolitan area.

My school's demographics reveal 96% Latino population, and nearly all of these students acquire English as their second language. The home language, including entertainment, is usually Spanish, so their greatest exposure to English occurs at school. Their only means to practice English comes from what they are able to bring home from school. Our students' families do not have resources to purchase technology for their children. Last year, I had a student who was not making adequate progress with speaking English. So, I lent my IPod to him, and he listened to my vocabulary recordings, then practiced by reading and repeating the words back into the device. We met weekly to discuss his progress. He made such great strides with his speaking and listening skills once he began practicing with the IPod. His parents were so grateful that he was finally beginning to catch up with his peers. The IPod practice closed the gap.

My Project

Imagine a student who is so eager to learn! He completes every assignment and works hard, but he just needs more practice and a different way to learn. Then, your donation arrives. His face lights up as he receives the IPod, vocabulary cards, and books, and he agrees to the plan that he and his teacher develop together. Not only does he practice listening, reading, and speaking English to learn himself, but he also teaches his family as he practices. This once silent boy now participates in class because people can understand him, and he finally starts to believe that he can succeed. This is what happened in my class last year after I lent the IPod to my student. I was amazed to see how technology impacted his confidence, academic success, and family. I provide books, a set of sight word cards, a bag, and a plan(contract). The student practices every day and turns in the IPod for my assessment weekly. We meet to debrief and set new goals. The plan is fun, engaging, and effective.

English is the key to opening the door to every class, for every class, and all of our state tests are reading-based.

Students who struggle with English are at greater risk for failure, and subsequently, dropping out of school. Our students not only love technology, but they also thrive when they use it for learning. I am asking you to support English language learners by providing an IPod for a student who needs more support with listening and speaking English. Your donation can change a life!
