Expressions and Palabras for Everyone!

My students need 110 composition notebooks and 110 sets of colored pencils for their year-long "palabras" (words) to prepare for end-of-grade testing.

My Students

"I have created a monster" will be the running theme this year in my classroom. "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak is not just a book, it is the inspiration I want my students to embrace on paper.

Coming to school hungry, angry, tired, or depressed does not lend itself to the learning environment needed to pass End of Grade Tests.

My students have instead put away their personal struggles and instead bring their expectations and dreams to me so I may guide and engage their learning. My lil' minds are ready to become lil' monsters with their palabras!(words in Spanish)

My Project

I want to give them everything they need to create an anthology of their vocabulary words (palabras in Spanish) that capitalizes on their creativity and also doubles as a study guide for the whole year. I have scoured the shelves at Staples, Office Depot, and Walmart for the hardbound composition notebooks as they stand the test of time in young hands. The students prefer these notebooks as they also provide support for students who do not have a table or hard surface at home in which to write. My students also are visual and tactile learners and need to be able to draw what they want to write in order to transfer from their heads into words. Knowing that I can encompass all learning styles and make writing less embarrassing for them because they cannot afford paper or colored pencils in Language Arts would be a huge blessing for them. Drawing pictures in color that relate to their palabras, is a perfect connective tool for students to have and use the whole year!

Remember looking under the bed or in the closet for monsters or sleeping with the light on?

Imagine those monsters are words. When you become familiar and are no longer afraid, they become your friends. Please help my students make friends with their monsters and become ones themselves.
