Celebrate Diversity With Great Books!!

My students need books that will help them better understand and celebrate diversity in our world!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a diverse world, but they are not exposed to a diversity of great books! Therefore, I am on a mission to provide my students with outstanding literature that will help them begin to understand cultures and identities.

My students are 4th graders living in New York City.

They come from very diverse backgrounds. Many of them are recent immigrants to the United States and many of them are first generation US citizens. All of the students qualify for free lunch. All of my students are labeled as English Language Learners. The majority of them experience the world through interactions in the neighborhood and through television.

My Project

I would love to expose my students to books that celebrate diversity. It is important that the children value their own culture as well as the cultures of others. Through books that explore various family identities, values, and customs I will be able to help my students find similarities and differences between their culture and the culture of others. I would like for my students to better understand why it is important to respect their own identity and respect the identity of others.

Books naturally lend themselves to having children reflect upon their own lives.

My students do not get to go to the library with their parents and pick out books. There is not even a book store in the neighborhood. It is important that I provide my students with as many good books as I can in our classroom library. They books I have in my classroom are the only books my students are exposed, therefore it is important that I provide them with books that encourage a celebration of diversity.
