My Students: I am a middle school counselor in a high poverty area in the South Bronx. My students unfortunately have experienced a series of challenging life situations that affect their academic, social, and emotional well being. Many of my students come from broken families, parents who are incarcerated, etc.

As a School Counselor I want to provide a welcoming and loving space where students can participate in a series of group counseling and individual counseling sessions. Many of my students are plagued by major life stressors, including domestic violence, gang violence, child abuse, sexual abuse, and the loss of loved ones. Many of my students need a place that feels safe, warm, and relaxing. I want to create a therapeutic room that includes nice comfortable bean bag seats (to relieve stress) and lots of arts and crafts to help them express their emotions through the arts.

My Project: Students will gain insights into their feelings and learn appropriate ways to deal with stress. We will work on anger management techniques and ways to cope with anxiety, anger, depression, and to appropriately express their feelings. This would create a place where teachers can send students who need to be removed from the classroom for a few minutes until they can put themselves back together whenever they become explosive.
