My Students

Imagine if you are a seven or eight year old who has homework to complete, but no pencil with an eraser at home. You want to get a good score on tomorrow's Math or Spelling test, but there is no quiet place to study, or maybe you have to babysit your younger sibling.

Our PreK-Grade 3 school is in the middle of a subsidized housing development in a Maine city.

Most children live with single parents or grandparents. Many enter school with language deficits and have had limited life experiences. Many have caregivers who live chaotic lives trying to meet their own needs, and lack the resources to adequately provide for their children's needs.

My Project

Please help us purchase books of high-quality children's poetry to be given to students who faithfully attend our after-school extended day program. Many families start out the school year with good intentions, but attendance drops off as families lose focus on what is needed. We wish for wonderful incentives to be awarded when students show regular attendance and persist in hard work. For many, a book reward would be the first book that the child owns.

I titled my project "DOLPHINS ARE INTELLIGENT" because the dolphin is our school mascot.

All of our students are born intelligent, but have many barriers to surmount. Help us reward our "DOLPHINS" as they learn that education is their ticket out of the cycle of poverty, and that hard work and persistence is valued and worthy of a tangible reward.
