Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this technological and digital age, it's easy to get lost on a screen and spend hours communicating via a technological device. The poem in your pocket idea is simple: select poems you love and write poetry of your own, then carry them with you or share your poems with family, friends, whoever!

I teach in an inner-city high school located in a culturally diverse part of the country.

The diversity of students is what attracted me to this school. Students in my classes come in with a wealth of information in their cultural and technological "banks", but usually are from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Often times they have not traveled outside of their own neighborhoods. Many students consider poetry dreary, boring, and unfathomable. My goal is to not only expose them to poetry but to deepen and widen their experience with poetry so that it enriches their lives and becomes more enjoyable. In this project students will not only be reading poetry from poets around the world and finding poems they love, they will also be writing their own poetry in a variety of styles . A deeper appreciation of poetry will also help prepare them for the rigors of college.

My Project

Poems have been stowed in pockets in a variety of ways, from the every-day books of the Renaissance to the fit-in-your pocket printings for soldiers in World War II. Students will be encouraged to not only find poems they love and want to share, but also learn fun ways to analyze more difficult poetry. The idea is to discover poets they enjoy whether it's being a fan of Shakespeare or Santiago Baca, Angelou or Hughes, I believe there are poems for everyone. Students will be exploring a variety of poetry resources to find poems that speak to them personally. Along with the library, bookstore, books at home, students will browse online poetry sites, sign up to receive a poem a day and explore mobile poetry archives to find their favorite poems. Students will write and select poems they love, then create a duct tape pocket to carry and share with friends, family, and others. Poems from pockets can be placed in random places, in school, parks, libraries, workplaces, almost any where.

Students often groan out loud when they hear they are going to read a poem or learn about poetry.

My goal in this class is to teach students to enjoy poetry and celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. For heaven's sake most song lyrics are poems. Students are more familiar with Tupac than Frost, Shakira than Dickinson. Deepening students’ understanding of poetry, inspiring some writing and making poetry a part of students lives is the ultimate objective of this project.
