Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Year after year and class after class; I hear science is boring. I hear we want to do science and not just watch science. The time has come to let my students be little scientist indoors and out-doors. The time has come to let these children explore science with their own two hands.
I have 20 bright, energetic, and hungry to learn first graders in my inclusion classroom.
We are located in Nevada, where all these children attend a Title I school. The 20 first graders are excited about learning everything they possibly can. For some of these children school is the only positive in their lives. For others school is the only place they will be able to touch a book. For some of these children, school is the only place they will get a kind word or a word of praise. All of these children are excited about learning everything they can.
My Project
I have a diverse class of inclusion students. Some of these children needs hands-on learning; some need to see what we are doing; some need to hear what we are doing; and some need all three. All of the resources I have chosen for science fit multiple ways of learning for my inclusion and ELL students. The first four resources are different science kits. The discovery nature kit was chosen specifically for my students to learn about nature and how nature affects our word. Next, the Magnet kit was picked so the children could understand how different properties affect the world we live inhabit. The sink or float kit will help the children understand will come to understand that water is large part of Earth and water plays an important part in life. The exploring light kit will give the children a chance to experiment with light and shadows. They will also gain an understanding of rainbows. Last, the big viewer will help my children who are visually impaired to see specimens up close.
In the last few years in my state science has been added to our CRTS; the test that the decide if we meet AYP.
The children who have been going up to 3rd, 4th, and 5th are in no way prepared for the science portion of this test. Your help will give my first grades the starting point to gain an appreciation and understanding of science. This appreciation and understanding will help prepare them for these high stakes science test they will encounter from 3rd grade on up to the end of high school.
