Reading About the Body

My students need a variety of 33 different books about the human body and disease to enhance their learning in anatomy and physiology.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Textbooks are full of information, but we all know that they are not always the most exciting to read or the most accessible to students still mastering English. My students deserve to realize that reading about science can be as interesting as it is informative.

I teach human anatomy and physiology to high school students.

My students learn about the human body by studying the causes and effects of many common diseases such as cancer, AIDS, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. Many of my students are interested in pursuing careers in the health professions and all students are curious about how their body works. Despite the minority and low-income status of the majority of our students, our school is dedicated to preparing ALL of our students to go to college. Many of my students are learning English as a second language and most need to improve their literacy skills in order to be ready to take on college level work.

My Project

In my class students engage in a variety of hands-on activities and experiments (see my previously funded donor's choose projects), but reading-to-learn is still an important part of class. Setting aside time in science classes for students to read widely on relevant topics enhances student understanding of the content (Fisher, Ross, and Grant, 2010). I am excited to try this approach, but I need to provide my students with a varied library of books in order to make this work. I am requesting 33 books about the brain, cancer, and immune system. I selected these books to span a range of reading levels and styles with the goal of engaging all of my students, regardless of their English proficiency or reluctance to read.

Please consider helping me to build a rich anatomy and physiology library to engage my students.

Your generous donation to this project will help my students learn about the human body and prepare for college while improving their literacy skills. [Fisher, Douglas, Donna Ross, and Maria Grant. "Building Background Knowledge. The Science Teacher Jan 2010: 23-26.]
