Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my ninth grade classes here in Washington have great potential—among them are dreamers, leaders, talented artists, curious minds, dedicated workers, promising writers, young scientists, independent thinkers, and kind hearts.

When it comes to reading, however, some students have become accustomed to frustration, boredom, and failure.

Few students would admit that they like to read, and many are used to reading excerpts of novels in their English textbooks. No wonder they don't like reading! The prospect of reading real novels is intimidating, but it's a challenge that must be faced in order for students to become thoughtful, analytical readers ready to tackle literary classics in a few short years. With college prep classes looming on the horizon, it’s crucial that my students grow significantly in both motivation and reading stamina this year.

My Project

My students need accessible, thought-provoking books that will connect with their lives, yet expand their horizons. They need books that will get them talking about life as we know it and the choices mankind may face in the future. I've chosen a selection of fast-paced, engaging books with appealing young protagonists facing real problems--classics like "The Giver" and new favorites like "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins and "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. These novels will serve as the foundation of our science fiction genre study, and fuel our discussions of how science and technology are influencing our lives today, and changing the shape of tomorrow.

This project will make a real difference for my students by preparing them for college & helping them to discover a world of books that rivals the excitement of Facebook, iPods, and smart phones!

With such engaging, provocative books at their fingertips, they’ll grow into critical thinkers and independent readers who can tackle a book of any size with confidence. I hope you’ll consider sponsoring this project and helping a new generation of readers discover the wonder of books. Thanks!
