Alternative Energy Sources

My students need a solar oven, renewable energy kit, solar race car kits, and meter sticks to effectively investigate alternative energy.

My Students

Racing cars and making s'mores may not sound like science, and that's exactly what my students say! But when I show them how to harness the power of the sun to do these things their creative juices "shine on"!

My seventh grade students are top dog in our middle school which includes fifth and and sixth graders.

Their very nature is to be active and social. In order to go with the flow and maximize the learning in this environment, I strive to create meaningful hands-on learning experiences which lend themselves to discussion and new ideas. My classes are mixed with learners of all types from mildly disabled to gifted. All socio-economic groups are represented as well as ethnic backgrounds. The bottom line is that when hands-on, student driven, interactive projects are introduced, more students feel confident and capable of tackling the task!

My Project

The resources requested will help complete a week full of state mandated objectives involving renewable energy and alternative energy sources. The solar oven will truly amaze them after it uses only the sun's energy to bake their self-constructed s'mores. They will construct solar powered cars and teams will race each other using the meter sticks to measure distance traveled. After the race, they will brainstorm to determine factors that could affect the speed of the cars. When possible, those factors will be applied to the cars and races will be re-run. The renewable energy kit will help them visualize the amount of energy needed to be harnessed from the sun, wind, and water for various activities such as lighting a bulb and sounding a buzzer. All of these activities are designed to encourage students to think scientifically and to broaden their minds when it comes to renewable and alternative energy sources which are the way of the future.

Students participating in these lab activities will be fulfilling state mandated objectives.

Reading and watching video clips about renewable and alternative energy sources has far less of an impact on the ability of students to grasp an understanding of their power and use. These lab activities include all parts of the scientific method as well as creativity, competition, team work, and best of all an active learning environment.
