Meaning Means Everything: Dictionaries Teach!

My students need 15 modern dictionaries to entice a love for words and their meanings, consequently enriching students' language, writing, and reading.

My Students

My students are currently working with adult dictionaries from the ‘70s. Each page is full of black & white complicated definitions, developmentally inappropriate examples, and unappealing pencil illustrations. With new books, looking up a word will no longer be a chore but an enjoyable treat!

The state requires students to be able to use reference materials effectively.

However, little funding is allotted for authentic, modern, kid-friendly resources that motivate student usage. My 26 fourth graders reside in a high poverty area. Even with little, they are happy and healthy. Still, they are hungry for knowledge. They devour new ideas, words, stories, and concepts. I believe new dictionaries will help feed their appetite for learning by exposing them to words they might not otherwise encounter or understand.

My Project

This particular children’s dictionary is the latest American Heritage edition published in 2009. This modern text contains a ‘how to use section’ vital for students’ understanding of dictionary features. The kid-friendly sentence examples increase the likelihood that students will use the newly learned word in their daily lives. It also includes color illustrations to enhance meaning and enjoyment. In addition, this dictionary was the recipient of the 2009 Parents’ Choice Approved Award.

Ever get stuck on a new word while reading a fantastic story?

You can either overlook it, use clues to guess the meaning, or look it up in a dictionary. Which choice enhances vocabulary and overall understanding and enjoyment of the text? Using a dictionary, of course! Using these modern, kid-friendly dictionaries will open up a world of rich words and luscious descriptions in literature while also enhancing students’ general language skills, such as spelling and identifying parts of speech.
