This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A journey of a thousand miles starts beneath your feet." My students and I are starting a thematic unit based on the concept of the journey. We need books to help us on this adventure. Please help us stock our library with journey books!

My students are amazing 2nd graders from an urban community in California.

The class is 25% African-American and 75% Latino and 100% qualify for free and reduced lunch. The students walk or drive to our public charter school. Our emphasis is on getting all of our students to and through college. Many of our students are English language learners and struggle the most in reading and writing. My students work hard and have big dreams. That is what inspired me to create a unit on journeys. They are just at the beginning of their own!

My Project

The read aloud is my class' favorite part of the day. It is when I read to them quality literature that they could not necessarily access themselves because it is above their reading level. I use this time to teach vocabulary, model reading with expression and fluency, and think through strategies that good readers use. I see the students apply these skills daily in their own reading. I am requesting a thematic set of read aloud books for our Journeys unit. We will be using these books to integrate history and geography into our reader's workshop. In addition to reinforcing reading strategies, we will discuss the journeys taken by immigrants, adventurers, and our own families using these stories as a framework. The students will explore how one tells the story of their own journey and use this knowledge in the writing of their own narratives. We will add our own personal histories to the time-line we create using the historical fiction in this collection.

In an educational environment where test scores and college preparation are key, it is difficult to find the time to integrate social studies into the curriculum in meaningful ways.

Often key concepts are taught independently without the depth and connectedness that can be attained through a standard-based thematic unit. Our Journeys unit will be a powerful month of language arts and social studies instruction, but we must have the books to make it happen. Please help us on our journey!
