WWW - Wonderful World of Worms: Composting in the Classroom

My students need a set of 12 books on how composting helps the environment and a worm composting classroom kit to help them get started with their recycling project.

My Students

It's just a worm! Many of my students would make that comment when they would see worms on the playground after a good rain. They never thought much of the slimy little creatures or the value that they hold. I want them to see what a great resource they are to our environment.

I will have a group of 27 fourth graders this school year, and I teach in an urban setting.

Many of the children have transferred to our charter school because many of the area public schools are failing. Our school's student population consists of approximately 92% free and reduced lunch.

My Project

The students I teach don't get to play outside near their homes or get their hands dirty because it's just simply too dangerous. I want them to have a hands-on experience with nature that they might not otherwise get to enjoy. With these books on how composting helps the environment and the worm composting kit, they will learn how each one of us - no matter how large or small - contributes to our environment. I believe by composting in the classroom, they will learn to appreciate nature, learn the importance of recycling, and get a sense of ownership for keeping their environment clean and healthy.

I believe this project will help my students to see first hand how just "feeding the worms" can have a huge impact on our environment.

I foresee them taking their knowledge and making a difference even outside of the school setting.
