My Students

Whether it be viewing pictures of the earthquake in Haiti or simply projecting a coordinate plane on the whiteboard, an LCD projector allows for the easy transfer of information and eye opening examples of math used in the real world.

I teach seventh grade math at a critical needs school in Mississippi.

The town was originally a thriving town on the mighty Mississippi but over the past several decades has seen a rapid decline in the economy. Over the past ten years over a third of the population has left the town. With these economic struggles come typical issues such as higher rates of violence, drug use and teen pregnancy. I've been blessed with excellent students throughout the years. Many students deal with difficult home environments, but they know that once they enter my classroom they will be pushed hard and treated with respect.

My Project

I spent this past summer teaching in a summer school for students that did not pass their seventh grade math class. Our class was outfitted with an LCD projector and surprisingly it was my first time using this technology. How life changing it was! Rather than writing all the instructions on the board or tirelessly drawing coordinate planes, I could just go to a pre-made PowerPoint slide and show perfect representations projected on the white board. I firmly believe that showing exact representations on the board made math much easier. In addition during the set (the beginning of the lesson which gets the student's attention), I showed real life applications of math. Examples of this included showing pictures of the Haiti earthquake, sports and even the BP oil spill. This not only made them more interested in math but also made them well-rounded. By the end of the semester they knew so much more about topics outside of math. Truly improving student's lives!

The projector I have selected has thousands of hours worth of life, so it will be used to positively impact students for several years to come.
