Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Putting the world at a child's fingertips has never been so fun and interactive. To solve the problems of tomorrow students need to be literate with the technology of today.

My school is located in a predominantly lower income, Hispanic community.

The students have limited access to computers both in and outside of school. With less access to computers English Language Learners have less of an understanding of the world outside of their community. They also are unable to utilize the fantastic computer programs available. Furthermore, they do not experience the interactive learning that is critical to developing understanding of language through student guided topics. Using computers is an invaluable privilege that many overlook and is an experience that is necessary for young children in the 21st century.

My Project

An iPad computer for my classroom students would have a powerful impact on my classroom environment and instructional options. I envision my students working in small groups doing research on topics of their choice. I foresee my ELL students practicing sight words with interactive software. I imagine the interactive, state of the art applications for reading, writing, and arithmetic. I picture the excitement, the possibilities, and the results that my students will feel. Finally, I know that access to a computer will have a true impact on their futures beyond an A or B in 3rd grade. If a computer will inspire them to seek knowledge, enjoy learning, and equip them for the 21st century I know that they will be more prepared for whatever the world may throw at them when they leave my room.

Since I have emphasized new technology in my classroom my students have had up to 20% higher test scores than their peers and over a 97% attendance rate in a community that is plagued by transiency and low achievement.

This technology will not only promote engagement and make school more of a fun place to be, but it will also show my students what is possible. What an amazing way to give students experience with the tools of tomorrow while learning the skills of today.
