Our school is much to look at.

It is old. It is dated. It is in need of repair. It is in Mississippi. Yet is has a spirit that exceeds the obstacles that it faces and generates some of the greatest young people in the region. My kids are poor but they are proud. They can achieve and they have a serious desire to learn. I find that when I raise the bar they try to leap over it.

My Project

Reading Faulkner is not an easy task. It is especially difficult for kids from tough circumstances. It is essential for any Mississippian to have read at least something by one of our most famous residents. This novel will provide an interesting preface to what I hope is an appreciation for an artist. It is a great beginning read. It is not as difficult as some of his works, but presents all of the dichotomies and complexities of place, and it is a place that my students know well. This is just a look through the lens of a different time period. This novel will allow my kids to explore the good and evil of the place where they reside and will present many opportunities for great classroom discussions and projects. I have in mind for them to write a paper juxtaposing Faulkner's Mississippi with their present-day one.

This novel allows for discussion of race, Mississippi, Civil War, slavery, and many other vital issues that still effect my students today.

It will allow for students to have a background and working knowledge of Faulkner and to read literature that is more complex and advanced then what they are used to. It will allow them to see the demons of our state and may yield a greater understanding for why Mississippi is Mississippi. Thank you for taking the time to review my project.
