My Students

"Pain is temporary. Film is forever." My students work tirelessly to hone their skills writing and producing their own films, but have no textbooks from which to learn the basics of their craft. Please help relieve some of the "pain" of film making by providing us the textbooks we need.

My students are approximately 150 high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors taking an elective film studies course at a large public high school in urban Louisiana.

They are a diverse group of learners, who cover the range of honors students, gifted students, and students with learning disabilities. They are an ethnically diverse group, and come from variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Most importantly, all of my students are passionate about the art and science of film, and deserve the resources to learn.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of textbooks. The book I have chosen is an excellent paperback book, giving more bang for the buck. Keeping a class set will allow a larger number of students to be reached for a smaller amount of your money. This textbook perfectly aligns with our units of study, and will supplement our in-class presentations, allowing me to meet a wider variety of learning styles. This book models the correct way to write about films, so that students will better know what is expected in their own writings. Students will work on film vocabulary, history, genre study, screenwriting, and production during this year-long English elective. From this book, students will learn the conventions and language of film so that they will be able to stretch those conventions and expand on the language to become the visionary writers, directors, and producers of tomorrow.

The film industry is a new and developing part of our local economy.

When these students graduate, there will be jobs available to them in the film industry immediately. Hopefully, this course will expose them to career options in the film industry and provide them with the basics to begin a college or apprenticeship path toward a film career. If nothing else, this course will give the students a much-needed creative outlet during their school day!
