My students need Kit, Forces, Energy and Motion K'NEX blocks for designing and testing vehicles as they learn Newton's laws of motion.

My Students

Prove it! Young scientists love to invent new and improved model vehicles as they test the forces of gravity, friction, and air resistance. Inventions take time. My students had access to borrowed K'NEX blocks for a few short weeks. They need their own equipment.

My students are brilliant in many different ways.

They attend an inner city magnet school which emphasizes the arts. Whether my students are children of research scientists or children whose parents are searching for jobs, they demonstrate their brilliance best in hands-on projects that demand cooperation and creativity. Few of the students have collections of educational toys in their homes. All of the students learn best when they are able to challenge, help, and inspire each other.

My Project

I have seen my students' excitement when they have been able to use borrowed K'NEX blocks for short periods of time. They learn to read and make technical drawings. They eagerly accept challenges to design and build vehicles that meet specific requirements. They begin to connect the results of their designing and building to scientific principles. If we owned K'NEX blocks, we could go far beyond what we've been able to accomplish with borrowed supplies. There could be new challenges. There could be contests, exhibits, and, best of all, student demonstrations of their ingenuity. There would be no doubt that the blocks are much more than toys: student scientists would use the blocks to demonstrate their knowledge of physics and their engineering skill.

I remember being a fifth grader and thinking of science class as the time when we got to do experiments.

I want my students to remember fifth grade as the time when they were challenged to "prove it!" No more would they think of science class as the time when they had to learn Newton's Laws and lots of terminology. Science class will be the time for dreaming up better ways to do something and expecting to prove that inventions work! K'NEX blocks will be a great tool for my scientists.
