My Students

Could you imagine an elementary student giving up their lunch/recess just to play math games? It happens almost every Monday in my classroom.

About 20 students, give or take, come to spend their lunch/recess with me.

We call our group Math Masters. These students are between second and fifth grades and vary in their math abilities. Some of the students really struggle with math while others excel. All come to work and play, learning along the way, and even helping others to find their fullest learning potential.

My Project

We began our club last Spring and the interest in it astounded me! At first I only invited about 12 students, the ones that struggled the most out of 5 math classes. These students needed a tutoring opportunity and I wanted to find the best way to reach them. After the invites went out, I had students coming to me asking if they could bring a friend. Then the word got out and more and more students were asking to come. I don't always have the same 20 students, but I do have a good base that are consistent. I love the interest and was psyched when the students asked if I would do it again this school year!

I found that the centers our school owns for this age range was somewhat lacking.

Continuing to use the same centers over and over might stifle the excitement, that is why it is so important to add to the collection! I have chosen games that not only work well in a center atmosphere, but also focus on skills that tend to need extra work like money, time, and place value. Manipulatives like Heximoes add a whole new dimension to dominoes and keeps with the fun game atmosphere. Thank you!
