Making Forces and Motion data Accurate

My students need 20 metersticks, 30 timers, 2 bags of legos to make models, 6 sets of scales to measure weights and 1 presentation easel this start of new school year.

My Students

The first time I taught forces and motion was a struggle. I have to go around to search for enough meter sticks and timers for my class. At one point that I couldn't fine one, I asked them to measure it with their feet, and lent my regular watch to record time. It made some of my experiments invalid

My school is in a suburb, with mostly students from low income families, most of them are in free reduced lunch, while a number are ESOL and with IEPs.

I am used to spending my own money to get extra materials for those who cannot afford to buy one like binders and markers. They love science a lot, and I don't want to sacrifice the quality of my teaching because of lack of materials so in the past I tried myself to improvise. I also have an advance class whose very enthusiastic about learning science concepts.

My Project

All of these materials is great help with meeting standards on forces and motion. In the past, I used to improvising materials and ended up results that are inaccurate. Meter sticks - will be used to measure distances instead of counting by their feet that we used before. Timers - will record how fast the movements, replacing my regular wristwatch. weighing scale - will replace the outdated old beam balance we have. Easel - will be used for presentation of their reports, instead of pasting it on the wall.

These materials would make the study a lot easier to my students.

They will be excited to do the experiments on speed and acceleration because of having the materials that could give them accurate measurements and data. And to me as their teacher, I would not be bluffing anymore with the results and I will not be tweaking data because the materials are there. So with these materials available, I definitely could make the class more meaningful and certainly meet the required standard by state.
