My Students

What young student wouldn't love to do school work outdoors?!?! Our school has created a school garden to provide a venue for science lessons. The materials requested in the project Garden Discoveries will enable the students to learn about pollination, recycling and other life science skills.

Our 5th grade students are an even mix of gender and race.

We are around 75% free and reduced lunch status. Our building is very fortunate to have outdoor learning areas with a school vegetable and flower garden, animals such as chickens and rabbits and environmental features such as rain barrels and composting. Our staff and administrators are dedicated to providing hands on inquiry learning for our students.

My Project

Because our school has created outdoor learning areas, I am always looking for materials that allow me to take my student outside for lessons. Science is the perfect subject to see and experience authentic learning. The Amazing Insect kit will allow me to order live insects to place in our garden for student investigations. The three sets of microscope slide kits will allow the to see plant/animal cells and a variety of insects and their body parts that make them great pollinators. The paper making kit will give my students the chance to recycle used paper into a new piece of paper using our own garden flowers as botanical decorations in the paper making process. 5th grade Arkansas State Frameworks mandate the study of plants and animals in ecosystems, parts of a plant, and photosynthesis. The Garden Discoveries project will help attack these skills in an hands on approach.

Brain research shows that learning and long term memory are enhanced when as many of our senses are used in gathering information.

The materials requested allow the students to use their sight, touch, smell, and hearing in the learning process in self discovery activities.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
