My Students

Did you see that??? Can you do that again?? Back in my day, and perhaps yours too, a good physics demonstration was a captivating experience that caused much discussion and debate between classmates and teacher. I am updating the classics by putting the demonstration materials in the students hands.

Our school is full of bright boys and girls who have great potential and the ability to be very successful.

In other words- they are like ALL kids! They have the drive and the skill to go on to high school and take the most challenging classes available. I consider it my mission to expose them to a variety of practical applications in eighth grade that will convince them that AP Physics and Chemistry are classes that they should consider as MUST-TAKE courses on the road to college.

My Project

A Ballistics car has a spring loaded cannon that launches a ball into the air while the car is rolling. The ball lands neatly back in the barrel of the cannon at some distance down the road. This FUN student-run demonstration can be completed at their lab station over and over again, allowing students to predict, measure and solve through trial and error and peer-to-peer discussion. It has the outstanding benefit of being a basic phenomena of motion that students will not believe after several trials. They will demonstrate Newton's Laws, Inertial Reference Frames and the Independence of X and Y Velocity Components. This fun and versatile apparatus will be a valued teaching aid in my classroom for years to come.
