My Students

"A right delayed is a right denied." Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said this during the Civil Rights Movement and is very true today. Many of my students do not realize the struggles and sacrifices that led to the freedoms they hold dear and their rights as citizens.

I know teachers everywhere say they have the best students in the world.

Well, I have the most inspiring! My students come from mostly low income urban areas. Let me tell you, the spirit and energy they come to school with everyday does not reflect their challenging living situations. They see every conceivable crime and yet retain their innocence and curiosity about many things. They are my inspiration each and every day to try to bring them resources and experiences that will show a world full of brighter and more prosperous futures. We are a Math and Science Magnet school; and especially in the Reading room we try to make every subject come to life. We do tons of inquiry experiments and labs (yes in Reading!) because the students not only need, but deserve a more rich and meaningful educational experience.

My Project

These resources will change my students lives by showing them what remarkable individuals fighting for a cause they believe in can do. My hope is that involving my students in literacy studies including these Civil Rights themed books it will not only show them how much people struggled to bring upon the change of equality, but give an appreciation of those freedoms today. "If we are to go forward, we must go back and rediscover those precious values"- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I believe that for students to get the most from an education they need to have as many rich experiences as possible.

We can do that by taking field trips of the imagination into relevant and beautifully written books. This project will allow my students to not only be educated about one of this nation's most influential periods but offer them the opportunity to walk beside Dr. King, attend school with Ruby Bridges, and be reminded that they are the key to making a difference in their future.
