Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of what we really need to know about how to live, what to do, and how to be, we learned in kindergarten. Wisdom did not lie at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in a kindergarten classroom!
I teach full day Kindergarten at a high poverty school in Nevada.
All students receive free breakfast and lunch and, unfortunately, lack some of life's most basic necessities. The majority of students who attend my school are English Language Learners and speak little to no English when first entering Kindergarten. Even though these students face many challenges they are very kind, caring, polite, hard working and respectful!
My Project
I am requesting a variety of magnetic materials to use at our Science Discovery Center. With the Stack & Match Color RIngs, kids follow the pattern cards to stack colored ring magnets…and discover how magnets attract and repel. With the Magnetic Forces Exploration Kit, children slide a powerful magnet over our clear-view box to separate magnetic iron filings from non-magnetic colored sand…and instantly discover which type of material the magnet attracts! With the Magnetic Discovery Board, kids run the attached magnet over the fascinating board, objects like nails and paper clips cling to the magnet…while rocks and buttons don’t budge. Kids love predicting the outcome…and exploring the principles of magnetism hands on! The Magnetic Designer is a fascinating way to build patterning skills and eye/hand coordination. Kids use a magnetic wand to move colorful metal disks around the board and create their own designs.
With your help, my students will be able to explore, play and learn about how magnets work at our science center.
Best of all these materials will be used for many years, so your contribution will have a far-reaching impact on the students in my school and community. THANKS! :o)
