My Students

Help make learning come alive! My students study our nation's government in fifth grade. Instead of just reading this in a textbook, we live it through an integrated unit. We need this novel by Dan Gutman to learn and understand in a fun way.

My students are from a large public elementary school in Indiana.

We have high poverty with about 45% minority. My students want to learn and respond to unique and different strategies of learning. My school is seeking ways to reach our students that will help them become successful learners and good citizens.

My Project

Help make learning come alive! My fifth grade studies our nation's government. We begin the year with an election unit in which we study national elections while simultaneously having a class presidential election. To begin, every student writes and presents a persuasive letter explaining why they would be the best candidate for class president. Students are then randomly assigned as Democrat or Republican. Parties meet and their candidate is elected in the primary. Then the campaign begins just it does in the requested novel! It is a lot of fun decorating the classroom, giving campaign speeches, and voting. Students even register to vote and receive a voter registration card that they must present to actually vote on election day. Once the votes are counted the winner is announced as class president and the runner up is the class vice president. These offices hold "perks" as well as responsibilities the class decides before election day. These offices are maintained all year.

By donating to this project, you will enable a class of students to live what they've read about.

I have successfully taught this election unit many years. I moved to a new school this year and do not have the novels to complete this unit. Please help my students develop a love of learning while learning about the United States government.
