My Students

Science experiments are always the most fun part of school. "By Golly, By Gum" is a fantastic science experiment to introduce the scientific process to elementary school students and they get to CHEW GUM in class. This experiment compares the mass of gum before chewing and after chewing. FUN!!!!

My school is a high poverty school with almost 98% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

One student is currently wearing a pair of rubber sandals where the heel has separated from the shoe. We are a year round school and the children couldn't wait to return after summer break. School is probably the best part of their day. I currently have eight students, but more are predicted to enroll once the traditional calendar begins. My fourth grade students are very sweet, but are very low academically. Their reading levels range from 2.3 to 4.1. Of the eight students only one know basic multiplication facts. They need lots of experiences to motivate them to read, write, and compute. I handed out tickets this week for all types of positive behaviors. Yesterday, I held an auction where they used their tickets to bid on items such as coin purses and candy. They were so excited and very thankful for the items. I have never experienced such gratitude from my students.

My Project

These balances will allow us to do many experiments in the classroom. Students will learn using hands-on activities to practice mass measurements. Through these activities students will be learning all aspects of the science process while incorporating math, reading, and writing.

These pan balances are important because I don't have any in my classroom.

In addition, I couldn't find any in the school to check out. If we have these balances, students could uses them daily to investigate the mass of objects. By doing this, they will gain real life knowledge and experience of how everyday objects compare in mass. These valuable experiences will allow them to practice not only the skills mentioned earlier, but important communication skills as they discuss their findings.
