Do you remember the first time you used a pair of scissors or glued two pieces of paper together? You were probably three or four years old or you may have been in kindergarten. The Art Center is used everyday in our 4K classroom. They use old magazines, crayons, paper scraps, scissors and glue.
I teach 4 year old kindergarten at a child development center in South Carolina.
Most of the children are considered high risk for academic failure. Since many of them are living in poverty, books and art materials are not available for most of them at home.
My Project
Before young children are able to write, they express their ideas through pictures. After reading a story, I often ask them to draw their favorite part of the story. Art materials are also used in our math lessons to create visuals to go along with the skills we are working on. In science, they create pictures of the weather, animal homes, parts of a plant, the seasons and other units we are studying. They enjoy creating seasonal and holiday decorations for their homes and making cards and pictures for others.
There are many art supplies available, but unfortunately the funding is not in our budget.
I would like to purchase a variety of art supplies for our art center. As I have mentioned, art is a part of our academics. They express their ideas through art. During the holidays, they are busy making cards for the people in a local nursing home and in February, they make Valentines for Veterans. They are learning how great it feels to give away something that they have made themselves.
