My Students

All to often when students hear the word "classic," they shudder. However, if exposed to the right classics, they would fall in love. This is why I want to conduct literature circles around C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia.

I currently teach to sections of 5th grade reading and writing at a Title I school in Georgia.

Being a Title I school, we have a population that contains around 65% of free and reduced lunch. However, with the current economy, our school is often overlooked for funds because of schools with higher reduced lunch populations. My students are always eager to learn, but often do not have enough novels for novel studies. These books would help change that.

My Project

I am requesting 15 copies of "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe", "Prince Caspian", and the "Voyage of the Dawn Treader", so that I can expose my students to classic literature. They will be used in small groups and placed according to if the child has seen the movies or not. My goal is that by exposing the students to one or more of the books within the series, they will be inspired to continue reading the series on their own.

By using classic novels that students are interested in, I hope to broaden their exposure of literature.

I also hope through the use of free tools on the Internet to share our experiences and have students create projects to encourage other students to do the same.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
