My Students

Save my voice! Struggling readers need to hear the words on the page over and over to help them gain fluency and increase comprehension. Struggling readers learn best when allowed to read information which is of interest to them. Let them listen to gain literacy.

We live in a rural section of Oklahoma with a high Native American population.

We have many students who live in homes where they are not exposed to literature. Our school is on the bottom of our counties test scores and below state test score averages. Our school is a Kindergarten through Fifth grade site. My children adore books and I have a good library because I have been teaching for 16 years. The children love to listen to me read but our read aloud time is limited. As first graders, we are just acquiring reading skills. Our classes have many struggling readers and most pieces of good childrens literature is above their reading level. Many of my students are global learners and need to receive reading instruction as a whole first, before breaking down the chunks. These children need to be saturated daily with the written word.

My Project

I have requested two, six jack literacy centers. My children will be able to work in a group to preview, review, and enjoy literature and music. I will be able to use self created CD's of high interest literature. This literature will be at speed that allows students to track words on the page. Before, during, and after listening, students will complete activities as a group to help them connect information to past experience, make predictions, and gain a deeper understanding of the information. These listening centers will increase comprehension and fluency in my students.

Reading opens the world to children.

Children who become good readers have limitless possibilities for their future. Please help me open all these possibilities for my kids! Thank you for time in reading this proposal.
