A Parent's Chance To Be A Fly On The Wall

My students need a flip video camera.

Mrs. Marx Waxhaw Elementary School
Waxhaw, NC Grades PreK-2

My Students

Parents, haven't you always wanted to be a "fly on the wall" in your child's classroom? This video camcorder will allow us to routinely video not only daily procedures, but also special activities like readers' theater performances, to share with parents through email and the classroom web site.

Ours is a rural school with most families having two working parents in order to make ends meet.

Parents are eager to be a part of their students' school lives, but work time often prevents this. In our class, we love to spotlight each student as often as possible, for their good decisions, good work ethic, and quality work. We often send home a great paper or student written story, with a quick teacher note of approval. We also document good choices and leadership behavior through notes and emails to parents. We especially love to target those little ones who in First Grade, have already acquired a "label" (usually negative). It is our privilege to "catch" them doing the correct behavior and work them out of their label and back into appropriate social and academic behavior. The notes and emails are effective. However, how much more effective it would be to actually show students at their best, through the video postings! They say a picture is worth a thousand words!

My Project

At our school, we focus on what students are doing correctly. When all students are quietly working at their centers or in their partnerships, the whole class is rewarded. How good it will be, to be able to share a quick video with parents, to show what our quiet learning time looks like. Likewise, we will show the more active times such as science or math centers, to show the variety of learning styles and activities we use in a day. Positive reinforcement, especially with documented proof of good behavior, will give confidence to our students. We will use the camera to share our Readers' Theater performances as we work on fluency and expression. We will video our "Authors' Tea" as we read our own written stories, sitting around our tables with tea cups and a snack. We will have students practice their listening skills as THEY man the camera to record their reading partner. And we will share these on our classroom TV, and through emails to parents.

As a working mom (kids now grown) I was not able to volunteer in classrooms.

How precious it would have been to see a clip now and then of my children at work in their school environment. The conversations at Parent/Teacher Conferences would have been so much more personal, and I would have know that those teachers really knew my child.
