Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine if the only thing you heard about your culture was that it was ruining America. If the message society gave you was that your cultural legacy was drug dealing, gang banging, or gardening. For my students, most of whom are Mexican-American, this is exactly what they are being lead to believe.

I teach at a continuation high school in southern California.

The student body is over 90% Hispanic. All of my students are significantly at-risk to not graduate. All enter my school behind in credits. Many are gang affiliated, on probation, teen parents, struggling with addiction, and living in poverty. All have heard that message that they are failures. Sadly, because of their personal circumstances, and the negative messages they hear about their culture, many believe this is true.

My Project

I have struggled to find novels for my Mexican-American students that portray the beauty and strength found in Mexican culture. Most of the books seem to glorify (or at least reinforce) the negative stereotypes that I want my students to surmount. However, I was lucky enough to read the novel Rain of Gold, which chronicles the the lives of two Mexican families immigration and assimilation into the U.S.. This book is the perfect blend of gritty realism infused with touches of fantasy to capture any reader's imagination. Even better, the characters and plot display the perseverance, courage, and honor with which I want my students to identify. My students will read this novel together in a unit called Freedom Readers. The goal of this unit will be to inspire students to pursue freedom from the physical, emotional, and societal chains that bind them. The story told in Rain of Gold will absolutely galvanize students to pursue a deeper understanding of their heritage and themselves.

There is a saying that you must have roots to have wings.

Yet, if your roots have been poisoned by decades of negative stereotyping, bigotry, and disenfranchisement, how will you ever come to believe you have the ability to soar? By providing my students with novels that challenge their understanding of their own cultural relevance and worth, you will be helping to fertilize their minds and expand their roots so that they will sow the seeds of hope.
