Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever had an experience that was trying and made you grateful for what you have? In Latino culture these episodes are recorded in an ex-voto, a painting used to record said event. My students need an avenue in which to document some of life's trials and tribulations they have experienced.

My students are inner city, first and second generation immigrants.

Many of them have endured separation of family in their efforts to accomplish their American dream. Many have survived gang and domestic violence and they need an avenue such as a painting that tells a story to document the wonderful things that have happened in their life. Most of my students are English Language Learners and enjoy art and writing. The majority of my students are Hispanic, but there are also students from other ethnicities.

My Project

Students will explore their heritage and document a significant moment in their lives by painting an ex-voto with acrylic paint on tagboard. During the heritage unit they will research their family tree, customs and traditions as well as documenting their own personal moment of gratefulness. This unit will coincide with Thanksgiving, a time when we give thanks for what we have in our lives. This special moment will be documented in an ex-voto, a painting of thanksgiving and they will write a small anecdote regarding the experience. They will explore world wide folk-art through virtual museums and explore how people documented their daily lives through paintings which will also include exploring the American Revolution. They will also compare this art style against traditional/nontraditional artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe,Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Vincent Van Gogh. My students need acrylic paint, assorted brushes, and tagboard to complete these ex-voto.

My students need an avenue to express themselves artistically and document some of the wonderful things that they have experienced.

There is no better feeling in the world than to pay tribute to family and events that have shaped our lives in a positive way. My students will explore painting with acrylics and learn different brush techniques to accomplish a vivid image on their ex-voto and will also document their event and utilize their writing skills to narrate their special events
