By The Great Horn Spoon! An Interdisciplinary Adventure

My students need ... By the Great Horn Spoon, my kids will be lost without copies of this book to read in English while studying the Western Hemisphere in Social Studies.

My Students

My students are not only good looking, they are also intelligent. They demand a quality education that is of this century. We are in a very rural group of communities, the largest in our county has a population of 3,000. Very few of my students have traveled beyond the next state.

Help us save Aunt Arabella's home by striking it rich in the California Gold Rush!

But first, we'll stowaway on a ship, race around Cape Horn, make our fortune, lose it, win a boxing match...Whew! What better way to learn geography, history, vocabulary, reading and research than with an exciting story.

My Project

We will race along with Jack and Praiseworthy and learn about the benefits of modern sanitation (no great cholera outbreaks), types of ships (we are a landlocked state surrounded by landlocked states), ingenuity (a handy skill often underrated), geography (from Boston around Cape Horn to San Francisco), gold mining (mining is a big industry in our state), loyalty and integrity. We will also learn how to determine word meaning from context, research skills, presentation skills and how to work as a group. These are skills needed in the workforce as well as in the classroom.

Our area is bucolic in both the positive and negative contexts of the word.

I want to take them to other times and places, and lacking the funds for busing and time travel, books are the best choice. By providing lively, engrossing reading material to my students, I can increase the likelihood that they will succeed in the projects that are assigned to that reading. All students want to learn. By the Great Horn Spoon encourages learning with an exciting story.
