My Students

The race is on...at least the solar ray-ce for alternative energy is! I am a Science teacher in NC. In 2009, we earned the title of "Honor School of Excellence" according to our state's ABC standards. Based on the rankings we are currently the 4th highest performing high school in NC.

However, there are many areas in which we still need to improve.

One of the Honors Earth Science curriculum standards concerns an environmental component: the effective use of solar energy resources. I would like to expand the solar energy unit to be more individualistic in the hands-on approach. (Previously, I was funded by DonorsChoose.org for similar projects.)

My Project

The request for this project is simply for a photon solar race car for each honors student. Our learning experience will be to build and race solar-engined race cars. There are two events that the students will be required to "enter": an aesthetic category and a performance one. Each car can be uniquely decorated; but more importantly solar panels will be strategically placed to inch out the competition. Hopefully the students can realize the advantage of the more strategically placed solar panels and how the panels influence performance. When we get ready to have our own version of the "sun rayce" (there is a a national collegiate competition with solar energy cars) my students will want to have their own car from which to learn.

Ultimately, by participating in the photon solar car project and our solar ray-ce, my students can actively and more effectively see how the sun can power these small contraptions...and certainly the larger ones, like our homes and buildings.
