Equalizing Access- High Interest Integrated Homework Project

My students need a variety of hands-on materials to practice new skills daily in reading, math and science.

My Students

Do you ever think about what it might be like for a student who has access to engaging games, manipulatives, and inspiring materials at home? Imagine them sitting down with their families to practice new skills they have just been taught. They get better with practice, don't they?

Now imagine hard working parents who are struggling to feed, clothe, and house their families.

These are the faces of many of my families who don't have access to the same benefits of these educational materials in order to practice the skills at home. My students attend a half day of kindergarten. Our district has families who speak 87 different languages. Some of these children have special needs. Many simply need more skill practice to achieve academic success. I want to give my students equal access to practice new skills independently and with their families. I want kids to be excited about "homework" and to have the same advantages as families who don't have to choose between basic needs and educational materials. My students will love homework and feel proud of themselves when they come to school the next day, showing all of us how much better they are at matching letters, reading, counting, adding, and problem solving!

My Project

After learning new skills my students will receive explicit instruction in how to use the materials for each of these literacy, math, and science activities. They will have an opportunity to practice skills while they are still fresh. File folder games, tray activities, and theme related materials will be checked out using a library card system in order for disadvantaged students to receive equal access to engaging practice time at home as well as in my classroom.

Yet, when they all walk through the doors of 1st grade, they are expected to perform and achieve equally. These materials will help my students smile with pride as they work alongside their peers.
