My Students

Imagine if you could not communicate your wants and needs. Well the students I serve do not have to imagine a life like this they live it everyday. They live in frustration of not being able to communicate their basic needs and wants. They face a life of never being able to say I love you or thanks.

The students I serve are preschool students that have been diagnosed with everything from developmental delays, autism, physical disabilities, to speech impairments.

These students are some of the best students you would ever want to meet. They attend school, daycare or headstart in a low income school district that cannot afford all the Assistive Technology and communication devices they may need to ensure the best possible quality of life. Even though these students have communication barriers due to their disabilities they still continue to strive for excellence. They communicate by pulling your arm or placing your hand for what they want. Some of the students are completely nonverbal and have to scream and cry in frustration while a teacher or parent attempts to figure out what they want or need. These students are the ones that with the right assistive technology and patience can push a button to tell you what they want. These are the students whom I am asking you to give a voice.

My Project

The resources I am requesting are all Communication Devices to ensure that each preschool student can have a way to communicate their basic wants and needs. The devices are the difference of a nonverbal child being able to communicate the need to use the restroom or being in a pull-up for the rest of their lives. The communication devices can help a student answer a question in class providing them with a sense of achievement and belonging. These communication aids will allow a student to communicate hunger, frustration, thirst, and most importantly love. The devices can make the difference between a student so frustrated from not being able to say "I want more" to a student that pushes a button to say "Thank You" or "I Love You". The devices can be programmed to communicate anything the student may need or want. Giving the student a better quality of life and most importantly independence. These students can learn how to communicate with their family and friends with a push of a button

This project is so important because everyone has a right to be able to communicate their basic want and needs.

Could you imagine a life where you were locked inside yourself not being able to say I am hungry. Imagine a life long game of charades were your survival was determined by people guessing what you are trying to say. This is the life these students are living. By donating to this project you will be giving these students a voice. Not only in the lives of these students but in a family.
