Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I remember looking forward to getting the Weekly Reader in my elementary years. Students today are becoming far- removed from the printed word and relying on their technological devices for all information. TFK is an awesome way to combine both!

My students are primarily low-income, rural, and many English Language Learners with migrant parents.

Some have not ever traveled outside maybe a 50-100 mile radius of our small community in Northern California! Our school was built in the 1950's and is sadly lacking modern facilities. However, the kids themselves for the most part are smart, inquisitive, and hopeful of a bright future. They are the reason I get up every morning.

My Project

Time for Kids magazine deals with current events and articles of interest that are age-appropriate. There are many activities that can be done with vocabulary, reading comprehension, debating issues, and test-taking tips. They also provide a great on-line resource that goes with each issue. I particularly enjoy the Around the World issue that is a supplement to the magazine four times per year. It gives the students insight into other cultures and a larger world view.

There is no money this year for this great resource in my classroom.

Last year I paid for it myself, but cannot afford it this year. I am scheduled to have 30-35 6th graders in my English class this fall and I will use the Time for Kids as enrichment to the regular state-mandated curriculum. It would make a great supplement to learning in a different format from a textbook. I feel TFK is a quality product with varied uses.
