However, they do not have supplies available in order to manipulate and explore to create an authentic hands-on experience in this area. Our district is urban and our school is located within our neighborhood. The students are a diverse population with many different learning needs. In order to make learning fun and meaningful, they must be given the opportunity to touch and try with real-life materials. My Project: I've requested science kits that provide whole-group and individual activities for the concepts of force and motion, simple machines (levers and pulleys, wheels and axles, and gears) books on each concept, and a readers theater script. These resources will help to create an Inventions Unit which covers both Social Studies and Science standards. Students will investigate how simple machines work such as levers and pulleys, gears, wheels and axles as well as the concept of force and motion. They will apply that knowledge and learn about an existing invention and its inventor. I am requesting a Readers Theater script about inventors to integrate the concept into reading which will provide an opportunity to build and practice reading fluency. Finally, students will be challenged to create their own inventions for an "Invention Convention" in which they will show their understanding of the new concepts. Without having materials to touch, manipulate and explore in whole group and individual settings, students would be limited to simply memorizing facts and have no real-world experience to connect the concepts of simple machines, force & motion and inventions. With your help, they will learn so much about simple machines, force & motion, existing inventions and the potential in themselves to be future thinkers/inventors! hide» My students need 10 machines, books and hands-on activities focusing on force & motion, simple machines and inventors & inventions during our Inventions Unit in science. details»
